The Black Gay Men’s Leadership Council is celebrating its 3 year anniversary. What a FANTABULOUS accomplishment! I had the pleasure of meeting BGMLC’s President, Lee Carson, at last month’s Philadelphia Obama Pride LGBT Community Meeting. Since then, we have had several opportunities to discuss ways in which our respective organizations can help each other to foster cooperation throughout Philadelphia’s LGBT community, particularly among people of color. The universe puts us in each other’s lives in order to do great things, and this meeting is no exception!
Last night I attended the monthly installment of Lady Lips at Stir Lounge, hosted my the lovely ladies from The Womyn’s Village. The event brought out many of the movers and shakers of the Philadelphia LGBT community. I will post pictures as soon as they are up. (Un)fortunately I missed the debates. Some of us went out in search for food. However, it was great to touch base with some friends I do not get to see very often, as well as an opportunity to meet several new, interesting people in the community. I believe new collaborations are on the horizon.
The Womyn’s Village is also hosting a Masquerade Ball on November 1. As the event falls on the weekend immediately following Halloween, those who attend are encouraged to wear a costume or attire representing their particular culture or country of origin. No, I am not wearing a dirndl! Event details will follow shortly!
The Diversity Projekt, The Womyn’s Village and the Black Gay Men’s Leadership Council have teamed up to bring “Still Black” to the Philadelphia area. I hope that this will be the first of many such collaborations to come! The trans community remains extremely marginalized and underfunded in Philadelphia. It is my hope that bringing this documentary to the Philadelphia LGBT will facilitate meaningful dialogue about the needs of transfolk in the community.
What great things are happening in your community?
